The goal of BYM is to provide Boston-area
youths with a subsidized, professionally implemented series of dance classes
in jazz, ballet, modern, tap, musical theater, and various ethnic styles.
Classes offer each student a practical and realistic experience in these
dance forms, giving equal attention to all genres and styles. On a more
basic level, the program attempts to spark an interest in dance, not only
as a career option, but as a form of self-discipline, artistic self-expression,
physical fitness, and as alternative to a passive or negative adolescent
lifestyle.
To foster an appreciation for dance and the performing arts in general,
we encourage our students to pursue their interests not only as dancers,
but also as designers, choreographers, arts administrators, and other
related occupations. The program supports this objective by offering the
students a choice of responsibilities outside of dance classes. Students
are given regular work-study assignments and schedules to assist in the
design and creation of costumes, posters, programs, press releases, and
other creative components; administrative tasks (corps management, class
sign-in, rehearsal assistantships, performance booking); and studio maintenance.
Performance events allow the students to directly apply their classroom/studio
technique in fulfilling public appearances that develop audiences for
themselves, their communities, and their peers. Through performance, our
students develop confidence, self-appreciation, camaraderie, teamwork,
responsibility to peers, and a constructive and entertaining way to channel
energy and express their feelings.
